Writing Resources for Students

The English Department is dedicated to advancing the written communication skills of NKU students. The following list of websites and articles was compiled to help students create quality college papers by improving their research and writing skills.

  • A Writer's Reference includes exercises and tutorials to teach students the fundamentals of effective writing. This site offers tips on how to develop thesis statements, capture the reader's attention, write in proper format (MLA, APA or CMS) and even gives examples of effective essays with commentary. 

  • How to Evaluate Web Pages helps determine the credibility of websites by offering six easy questions that students should ask of any online sources.  

  • How to Find Articles: An Easy Guide gives step-by-step instructions for finding periodicals and accessing indexes from NKU's online database right from your home computer. 

  • Standard Document Format outlines the basic guidelines for correctly formatting a college paper. This includes proper headings, margin sizes, font and spacing.

  • Student Writing at NKU gives examples of outstanding essays written by NKU students in personal, persuasive and analytical styles.

  • How to Recognize Plagiarism is a website that explains how to avoid plagiarism in an essay, including tips on when to use quotations versus paraphrasing and how to appropriately cite sources for each.

  • The Writing Center is a FREE resource for all NKU students. This program allows students to work with skilled college writers in order to improve on small papers, large research projects and writing skills in general.
