General Information
All NKU students must take written communication courses as part of the general studies requirements for graduation. There are three options to meet this requirement:
-
Option 1 -- College Writing (ENG 101) and Advanced Writing (ENG 291)
-
Option 2 -- College Writing (ENG 101) and writing intensive course 291 in a particular major
-
Option 3 -- Honors Freshman Composition (ENG 151)
Initial placement into the written communication sequence is determined by a student's score in the English examination portion of the ACT. Here are the starting courses based on that score:
-
26 or above start with ENG 101 or ENG 151
-
18-15 start with ENG 101
-
17 or below start with ENGD 090
- ACT Reading Score 17 or below start with RDG 091
Students scoring 17 or below on the ACT English examination must take a writing placement test on the NKU campus.
The writing test is administered by the NKU Testing Office. To get information about test dates or register for the test, contact the office at 572-5180 or http://testing.nku.edu.
The on-campus writing placement test score is final and cannot be retaken.
