Licking River Review Handbook

Ownership and Line of Authority

The Licking River Review, NKU’s national/regional literary/art magazine, is operated under the auspices of Northern Kentucky University. The privilege of publication has been extended to students working on Licking River Review by the Board of Regents and is conducted under authority of the President of the University. 

A student editor is recommended by the advisor with the approval of the Student Media Board. The student editor will choose and direct a staff organized by him/her to assist in procuring and selecting materials for publication.

General supervision of Licking River Review is the responsibility of an advisor named by the Dean of Students on the recommendation of the Student Media Board.  The advisor will be available for consultation and may make recommendations.  If it is requested, the Student Media Board will advise Licking River Review. After publication, the Student Media Board may review and make recommendations regarding Licking River Review. 

Northern Kentucky University will avoid prior restraint and will not take action unless the material to be published would materially and substantially interfere with operation of the university.

Student media at Northern Kentucky University are free of censorship and advance approval of copy.  Its editors and managers are free to develop their own editorial policies.  Freedom of the Press as guaranteed by The Constitution of the United States is not impeded or interfered with by Northern Kentucky University or any of its agencies, staff, faculty, or administrators.

General Operating Policies

The staff of Licking River Review will be chosen by the editor in consultation with the advisor from those willing and able to assume the responsibilities of helping to bring the literary magazine to publication by soliciting and selecting publishable material, editing, proofreading and distributing.  

Licking River Review, being primarily a national/regional literary/art magazine, should have its foremost goals the publication of worthy artistic endeavors whose dissemination will reflect Northern Kentucky University’s literary/artistic community. 

As a secondary goal, Licking River Review will serve to showcase the best student literary and graphic art submitted from currently registered Northern Kentucky University students. Toward that end, no less than 25 percent of the magazine’s pages would be devoted to showcasing student poems, fiction, and artwork from Northern Kentucky University students, alumni, and staff.  

Organization, design and format are creative decisions to be made by each incoming staff.  The staff is responsible for publishing one issue per academic year. If, however, enough material is secured, along with adequate funding, the staff shall not be restricted to one issue per year. 

Material solicitation should include as many avenues of University communication as possible (newspaper, radio, memoranda, fliers, etc.), as well as letters since solicitation from writers and artists within the tri-state area, the Midwest, and the nation should be considered. Licking River Review is a regional/national student publication whose mission is to aspire to the professional standards of similar regional/national literary/art magazines produced at other universities.

Licking River Review’s mission is essentially threefold: 

  • To showcase outstanding student work
  • To promote outstanding work of writers/artists from any region on the country
  • To provide student editors and staff members with valuable hands-on editing/publishing experience

The editorial staff, under the direction of the editor, will select the material for the Licking River Review, keeping in mind that the first criterion for publication is literary presentation in the Licking River Review. 

The publication of Licking River Review, from collection of material to distribution of the magazine, should be a learning experience for staff members, who should strive for the highest literary/artistic standards.

Duties of the Editor 

Each student editor/manager shall develop a set of standards to be followed by the staff during the academic year in which the editor manager is in that position. Furthermore, the editor/manager must discuss such guidelines with their staff and provide a copy for Student Media Board records no later than the first board meeting of the academic year.

The editor is responsible for coordination of all activities involved in publication of Licking River Review. The editor organizes and directs the staff and mediates disputes, seeking the help of the advisor when needed. 

The editor is responsible for recruiting, motivating, leading a staff to produce the highest quality literary/art magazine they are capable of producing. The editor will schedule and conduct regular staff meetings, log in manuscripts, evaluate and select manuscripts for publication, copy edit manuscripts and proofread page galleys. 

In consultation with the advisor, the editor will plan and submit a budget for Licking River Review for the upcoming year.  All funds must be in accordance with Northern Kentucky University policy and procedures.
