Student Staff Positions 

The Licking River Review is staffed entirely by NKU students. Every April, staff positions open for new applicants. Fliers are placed around campus that include guidelines for applying for a staff position. Applicants must take the Intro to Creative Writing course before applying for a staff position.

Staff positions include:

  • Fiction Editors (2 positions)
  • Associate Editor 
  • Poetry Editors (2 positions)

  • PR Representative

The publication of Licking River Review, from collection of material to distribution of the magazine, should be a learning experience for student staff members, who should strive for the highest literary/artistic standards.

Duties of the Student Editor 

The Student  Editor is responsible for coordination of all activities involved in publication of Licking River Review. The editor organizes and directs the staff and mediates disputes, seeking the help of the advisor when needed. 

The editor will keep track of submissions and relevant mail. He/she will also do the routine business of the publication, such as sending requests for guidelines, depositing checks and sending out requested copies.

The editor is responsible for recruiting, motivating and leading a staff to produce the highest quality literary/art magazine they are capable of producing. The editor will schedule and conduct regular staff meetings, log in manuscripts, evaluate and select manuscripts for publication, copyedit manuscripts, arrange a printing schedule and proofread page galleys. 

The student editor shall develop a set of standards to be followed by the staff during the academic year in which the editor is in that position. Furthermore, the editor must discuss such guidelines with their staff and provide a copy for Student Media Board records no later than the first board meeting of the academic year. In consultation with the advisor, the editor will plan and submit a budget for Licking River Review for the upcoming year.  All funds must be in accordance with Northern Kentucky University policy and procedures.   

Associate Editor 

The Associate Editor, if applicable, will help the editor read through the submissions. The associate editor will also help log in submissions and keep track of paper work. The assistant editor is also expected to help with the proofreading and the copyediting of the proof pages. Other duties may be assigned as needed. 

Web Editor 

The web editor is responsible for maintaining and updating the LRR FaceBook page, updating Duothrope, updating content (written by the PR Representative) to the LRR website, archiving past issues, and reporting to meetings on a monthly basis. Other duties may be assigned as needed. 

Genre Editors

The Poetry, Fiction and Non-Fiction Editors will read through their respective genre submissions and help the editor(s) make final decisions on selections. After selections are made, genre editors are expected to help in proofreading and copyediting the proof pages. Genre editors may also be asked to help log in submissions as they come in.

Art Editor

The Art Editor will solicit art submissions from the art department and help the editors choose art for the cover and the interior of the magazine. 

PR Representative

The PR Representative is responsible for submitting the call for submissions to applicable websites, assisting in the overall promotion of LRR, creating content material for the website, assisting in the promotion and planning of the LRR release party, and the distribution of current journal issues. The PR representative will also report to meetings on a monthly basis.
