Certificate in Creative Writing

Certificate in Creative Writing is a non-degree, graduate certificate program composed of 15 credit hours of specialized courses designed to explore, in an intensive workshop environment, the theoretical and practical concerns of creative writers today.

Credits earned toward the Certificate in Creative Writing may apply to or be transferred into the Master of Arts in English at the program director's discretion.

Course requirements

The Certificate in Creative Writing requires 15 hours of coursework, representing at least two genres of creative writing and four different course numbers selected from the following:

  • ENG 542 -- Teaching of Creative Writing
  • ENG 622 -- Advanced Poetry Workshop
  • ENG 624 -- Advanced Fiction Workshop
  • ENG 626 -- Advanced Novel Writing Workshop
  • ENG 628 -- Advanced Creative Nonfiction Workshop

Registration requirements

Registration for the Certificate in Creative Writing programs requires the following: 

  • Application for graduate admission to NKU
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Grade of B or higher on all graduate work that may apply to the certificate

At the discretion of the graduate director, a writing sample may be required for evaluation and undergraduate courses recommended for applicants who did not focus on creative writing at the undergraduate level.
